City Employees Show Up for a Day of Softball—and Friendly Rivalry

What a day at the diamond! The West Valley City Softball Tournament was a home run of excitement, teamwork, and a little healthy city rivalry! Here's a recap of the day from Rhett Gardiner, one of the organizers:

After a full day of diving catches, towering home runs, and lots of cheering from the sidelines, it was the West Valley City Firefighters who turned up the heat and took 1st place with a blazing performance. These guys didn’t just fight fires—they brought the flames to the field!

Right behind them, swinging for justice, was Legal Force from the Police Department, securing a strong 2nd place finish. They brought the hustle, grit, and competitive edge that kept every game electric.

Not far behind, the Work Zone Warriors powered through with precision and grit, hammering their way to a well-earned 3rd place finish. Their hustle, heart, and heavy hits were nothing short of blue-collar brilliance!

Coming in at 4th place, the fan-favorite Parks and Wrecked lived up to their name with wild plays, fearless slides, and a whole lot of fun. They wrecked expectations and brought the energy to every inning!

A huge shoutout to all the teams that came out, played hard, and made the day unforgettable. From the dugouts to the grandstands, the WVC spirit was alive and well. Can’t wait to see you all next year—same time, same place, even more action! 💥

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Shining A Light On Employees Who Go Above and Beyond

The Planning & Zoning department is where people come with questions about what they can do with their property. Steve Lehman, Current Planning Manager, has been taking the time to answer those questions since September 1996.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my career in planning and zoning and have enjoyed seeing the city grow and prosper,” he said. Steve is a lifelong resident of West Valley City and says that working in Planning & Zoning allows him to contribute to shaping the city to what it is today, especially by helping people develop their properties into residential subdivisions and planned communities. “Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to help balance the needs of residents, businesses, and future growth which makes the work both meaningful and engaging,” he said.

What Steve has enjoyed the most about working for West Valley City is the relationships he has developed with everyone in Community Development. “We are truly on the same team, wanting to provide excellent service to both residents and developers, as well as internally wanting to help each other be successful,” he said. “During the week, we spend more time here at work than we do at home, and so those relationships are important and critical in creating a healthy work environment.”

Steve enjoys traveling with family, especially cruises to Hawaii and the Caribbean. They also enjoy going to St. George for concerts and Broadway plays at Tuacahn.

Thank you for helping out our residents, Steve!

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS

Preventive care is one of the most effective strategies for maintaining long-term health and reducing healthcare costs.

Why Preventive Care Matters

  1. Early Detection Saves Lives: Many serious health conditions—such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease—can be treated more effectively when caught early.

  2. Prevents Chronic Diseases: Preventive screenings and lifestyle counseling can help identify risk factors for chronic illnesses like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. When caught early, these conditions can often be managed or reversed through diet, exercise, or medication.

  3. Reduces Healthcare Costs: Preventive care helps reduce ER visits, hospitalizations, and long-term treatment needs.

  4. Improves Quality of Life: Preventive care means fewer sick days, more energy, and a greater ability to engage in everyday activities.

Examples of Preventive Care

  • Annual Physical Exams

  • Vaccinations

  • Screenings

    • Blood pressure checks

    • Cholesterol testing

    • Diabetes screening

    • Cancer screenings

    • Bone density tests

  • Mental health screenings and evaluations to help detect depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions

  • Counseling and education including guidance on nutrition, tobacco cessation, weight management, and stress reduction
