Arms Out: How you can support the WVCFD Whole Blood Program

GettyImages-2043560739_edited.jpg

The West Valley City Fire Department started a Whole Blood Transfusion program last fall, aimed at saving more lives in the city. And now, it’s time for the city to step up and help them!

On Monday, March 9th, the Fire Department is hosting a blood drive at Station 74 from 12pm-6pm. They hope drives like this will keep a steady supply of blood in our area so they can continue helping patients who are dealing with blood loss. All blood types are encouraged to donate!

March is Red Cross Month, so during that month the Red Cross is giving free A1C testing for successful blood donation, which is commonly used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes. They are also giving out $15 Amazon Gift Cards for those who donate in March!

Join the Fire Department in saving lives! Sign up for the blood drive today!

City employees step in to teach local students about city government

In January, American Preparatory Academy 10th graders flooded city hall to learn about city government from all its different departments. Thank you to all the representatives who stepped up to talk to students and answer questions about their careers!

Neighborhood Leadership Academy

The West Valley City Neighborhood Leadership Academy kicked off its first week with 29 residents from across the city. This free, 9-week program brings neighbors together to build leadership skills, learn how city government works and connect with one another. Participants meet weekly and will explore city departments, strengthen communication and leadership skills and identify opportunities to make a difference in their neighborhoods. The program wraps up with a resident-led neighborhood improvement project, where participants work with City staff and resources to turn their ideas into action. We’re excited to see the impact these emerging leaders will have in neighborhoods throughout West Valley City.

Employee Spotlight: Shining a Light On Employees Who Go Above and Beyond

Monte Quillen is a firefighter/paramedic who has been with West Valley City just over a total of 12 years. He worked with the fire department for 10 years, then took 18 years off, and came back to the city in the fall of 2023!

“Seriously--it’s the best job ever,” said Monte. He says he missed working with WVCFD so much he came back instead of retiring.

“I’ve been in public safety since 1990 and WVC is easily the favorite community I’ve served in,” Monte said. He likes that every day at work is different, and seeing his skills make a difference to others. He also really appreciates the people he works with.

“From our administration to our firefighters on the floor—their dedication to self-improvement, their care for the citizens, and implementing programs and procedures within the department that are on the cutting edge of emergency medical services or not normally associated with a fire department is progressive and exciting to be a part of,” he said.

Monte has been very valuable to the fire department, writing and winning several grants—including Assistance to Firefighters Grant to help with turnouts and cancer screenings, and a grant to hire and fund 9 additional firefighters. West Valley City Fire was one of the first to be awarded those grants this year.

Other information Monte wants us to know about him is that “I’m over 55 and if you happen to see me running around with a three year old—she's my daughter and not my granddaughter.”

Thanks for all of your great work, Monte!

Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Month, a perfect reminder to take care of one of our hardest-working organs—your heart!

While Valentine’s Day may focus on chocolates, flowers, and love notes, it’s also a great time to show your heart some real love. Simple habits like moving more, eating heart-healthy foods, managing stress, and keeping up with preventive care can make a big difference.

So this month, whether you’re sharing candy hearts or dinner plans, don’t forget the most important relationship of all—the one you have with your own heart. A healthy heart is always in style.

Payer Matrix: Specialty Medication Benefit

Beginning January 1, 2026, West Valley City is enhancing its specialty drug program to better support employees who use high-cost specialty medications. These specialty medications will now be managed through Payer Matrix, and coverage for those medications will no longer be provided directly through Select Health.  If you currently use a specialty medication, a Payer Matrix Care Coordinator may contact you to guide you through available assistance programs and work directly with you and your healthcare provider to ensure timely access to your medication. This advocacy service helps ensure continued access to medications with little to no out-of-pocket cost to eligible employees.

For more information about Payer Matrix, call 877-305-6202 or email customerservice@payermatrix.com.
