Measles in Utah: Personal Risk and Prevention

GettyImages-2168311147.jpg

Recent public health reports indicate ongoing vaccine-preventable disease activity in Utah, including confirmed cases of measles. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services has documented community spread and continues to monitor cases statewide. Public health authorities recommend that residents ensure they are up to date on recommended immunizations and seek guidance from a healthcare provider regarding personal risk and preventive measures.

To support your health and well-being:

  • Review your immunization status: The Utah statewide immunization registry (USIIS) can help you locate personal vaccination records if needed.

  • Consult your healthcare provider: Before receiving any vaccine, please discuss your medical history, potential risks, or benefits, and whether a vaccine is recommended for you or family members. Health decisions should always be made in consultation with a licensed medical professional.

  • Follow local public health guidance: State and local health departments provide up-to-date recommendations on vaccines, outbreak status, and next steps. Utah health authorities advise that individuals at risk — especially those not up to date on routine vaccinations — consider discussing additional protection with their doctor.

  • Travel and other preventive health considerations: If you or your family plan travel or have specific health concerns (e.g., for infants, older adults, pregnant individuals, or those with health conditions), a healthcare provider can help tailor recommendations to your situation.

Please remember that this message is informational and not medical advice. Always consult your physician or healthcare provider for decisions about vaccines and health care. For more information, please visit: https://epi.utah.gov/measles-response/

Employee Spotlight: Shining a Light On Employees Who Go Above and Beyond

Matt Atkinson, Facilities Coordinator Supervisor, has been with West Valley City for nearly 17 years. He was hired to work as an electrician and “quickly made a huge impact within the facilities team,” according to Facilities Manager Fabian Zullo.

“Matt was not only skilled in electrical work, but he also contributed his talents helping with all phases of remodeling projects,” Zullo said in a recent presentation of an “Employee of the Year” award to Matt. Matt was also recognized for learning extra skills to benefit the city, going above and beyond to meet project deadlines, and using his abilities to train new employees. “He leads by example and his attitude of working hard and helping others succeed has earned him the respect of his peers,” Zullo also said.

Matt says what he enjoys about his job is “being able to interact with the many faces I encounter each day and hopefully make their day a little brighter.” He doesn’t seek recognition but is often behind the scenes of successful projects completed by the Facilities Division.

Matt says he leads a pretty simple life. “I love living a rural lifestyle and spending time with my family.”

Thanks for sharing your talents, Matt!

Voluntary Leave Bank Program

West Valley City recognizes that employees and their family members may have a serious health condition, resulting in the need for additional time off in excess of their available accrued leave. To address this need, all eligible employees will be allowed to donate PTO to their co-workers in need of additional paid time off, in accordance with the new Voluntary Leave Bank Program. Participation in this policy is entirely voluntary.
